Westward Ho!
Manifest destiny was the idea in the 1800’s that the United States was destined to colonize and populate the west, spreading American ideas and politics from the Atlantic to the Pacific. Farms, ranches, and communities were established in the west by pioneers, cowboys, and miners. The California Gold Rush helped to push this expansion along. Follow the following links to see how the west was “won” and explore some of the complicated history behind manifest destiny.
