Teaching with TrueFlix
Science is hotter than a solar flare these days and with good reason. Global warming issues blanket the news, alternative energy debates rage on and on between politicians, and educators strive to keep scientific pace by implementing various initiatives including STEM, STEAM, and the Next Generation Science Standards. In answer to the growing demand, five new science units, including Extreme Laboratories, have just been added to your TrueFlix subscription. Scientific labs more than a mile underground in an old mine shaft, or deep beneath the ocean’s surface, or tucked beneath a glacier, or even clinging to the side of a volcano are ready to be explored in this fascinating unit. |

A Multitude of Media
Once students build their background knowledge on the varying types of laboratories, take them on a virtual tour of the world’s only undersea research facility. The Aquarius website, found in the Explore the Web section, offers students the chance to take a trip 60 feet below the surface to tour both the inside and outside of the Aquarius Research Lab. Dozens of lesson plans are also available which will have students designing underwater habitats for humans, comparing atmospheric and underwater pressure, defining internal waves and much more. |

Project Idea
In addition to the designated project featured in this unit, offer students additional project options. They could create a timeline detailing the pivotal moments of the construction of the International Space Station. Have students augment the timeline with photographs found on the Space Station website in the Explore the Web section to visually show how the construction progressed over the years.

Editor's Tip of the Month
Encourage collaborative work, in-depth learning and presentation skill development! Break students into smaller groups and assign each group a specific extreme laboratory to research. Let students choose the media type of presentation they’d like to deliver and encourage them to get creative.
Each presentation should encompass at least ten facts about the laboratory or the people involved with it. Facts can be cited in a separate document.
