Teaching with TrueFlix
Whether it’s black ice, blizzards, super storms or wintery mixes, wintertime can wreak havoc on classes and lesson plans (in the northern and midwest classrooms, anyway). When students return from their snowday, happily filled with hot chocolate, encourage them to discover the science behind that unexpected day off. The TrueFlix unit on Meteorology in the Earth Science category will take students into the amazing world of weather, the people who study it, and the tools used to predict it. |

A Multitude of Media
Sky Watchers’ Guide is a website from Environment Canada that focuses on forecasting for students, without computers. Emphasis is placed on three basic principles: observing, analyzing, and disseminating. Children will learn how to “read” clouds, observe plant behavior, the background stories of weather lore, and more. Utilizing these three basic principles, students can then tie their observations together to create an amateur forecast. |

Project Idea
Using the information students learn from the Sky Watchers’ Guide site, in addition to the information in the Meteorology eBook, have students keep their own weather journals. Students should predict the weather for a designated amount of time, explaining why they are making their particular prediction. They should keep track of the actual weather to see how their prediction compared to the actual weather. As an added component, have students look at the published weather report as well. They can see how they compare to an actual meteorologist. |

Melissa’s Tip of the Month
Don’t forget your students have home access to all of the TrueFlix units. If your weather forecast is predicting some days away from the classroom, perhaps you can assign a unit while the students are at home. You can also use this for a follow up to a lesson you do in the classroom, or as a resource for a research project. |
