Teaching with TrueFlix
With the primary debates dominating the news and Election Day looming on the near horizon, now is the perfect time to have your students explore TrueFlix's new unit on Voting. From the Electoral College and the Nineteenth Amendment to democracy and the constitution, the Voting unit provides all the resources needed to discover the history, players, and process of our system of government.
A Multitude of Media
Created and maintained by PBS Kids, both The Democracy Project and the ZOOMout the vote sites found in the Explore the Web section offer some highly-engaging resources. While The Democracy Project still has resources from the 2012 Presidential Campaign, this is a great site to introduce the presidential election process and to revisit as we get closer to the 2016 vote. Campaign poster coloring sheets can be utilized to really get kids in the spirit of campaigning! ZOOMout the vote offers a great introduction to understanding voting and why it's important and how the voting process works at a variety of levels.
The Democracy Project
Project Idea
Use the debate topic in Explore More (Should Voters Be Required to Show ID?) to inspire a class debate. The Voting e-book provides more background information, and students can have a class discussion on the pros and cons of voter ID before they break into teams to strategize their position. Additional resources in Explore More provide sample arguments, which students can expand upon to demonstrate their understanding of the election process.

Melissa's Tip of the Month
Use the Find the Truth question found in the beginning of the Voting e-book to start your students out on their path of exploration. The question, “Why Vote?” is broad enough to be used with several different activities, and students may be surprised to see their answers change or expand as they learn and explore more about the voting process.
