Teaching with TrueFlix
Hundreds of thousands of surf-seekers travel to our shorelines each summer to experience the magic, mystery, excitement, and therapy of the world’s oceans. Whether or not they have plans to make their own pilgrimage to the shore this summer, the TrueFlix unit on Oceans, found in the Ecosystems section, offers all your students the chance to explore this watery wonder. This unit will encourage students to think about what lives in the ocean, the different functions of the ocean, and the ways in which humans can help or harm the ocean.
A Multitude of Media
EcoKids, in the Explore the Web section, will expand your students’ knowledge of the environmental impact humans have on the oceans and give them ideas of what they can do to help. The website has direct references to the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, the fragile Coral Reefs, and the migrating rubber ducks—all topics discussed in the book. The website also provides 10 tips students can do to help preserve the environment.
Project Idea
The Ocean ebook in this unit highlights several ocean-dwelling animals—from giant squids to dolphins to jellyfish. Have students work independently or in groups to study one of the animals featured. Encourage them to use resources found in the Explore More section or the websites listed in the back of the book. For a final project, students can create a clay model or other 3D version of their animal. At the end of the project, students can present their work and research to their peers.
Melissa’s Tip of the Month
Ducks ahoy!

The book references a 1992 incident in which crates of rubber ducks fell off a cargo ship. Because of the ocean’s current, the ducks traveled throughout the world, ending up in Great Britain in 2007. Follow up with the article “Ducks at Sea” in the Explore More section, as well as with Eric Carle’s picture book 10 Little Rubber Ducks to give students a well-rounded understanding of this fun incident.
