Teaching with TrueFlix
April 14th marks the anniversary of one of history's most infamous maritime disasters – the tragic sinking of the "unsinkable" Titanic. More than a century later, students are still fascinated by the disaster. Discover a new perspective on the tragedy with the Titanic Disaster unit, loaded with facts to satisfy every student's curiosity. The book begins with the building of the ship, ends with the discovery and exploration of the sunken ship, and covers everything in between. Students are sure to find a new fact or two!
A Multitude of Media
From historic photographs, to survivor statements, to rare dive videos from the wreckage and more, CyArk's digital archive of the remains of the Titantic provides first account primary sources that unfold the dramatic story of the shipwreck. Encourage students to compare the original photos to the dive footage, or create their own fictional survivor stories using the information they find.
Project Idea
Did you know that Titanic burned more than 650 tons of coal every day, and that it would cost $167 million today to build the ship? The History Channel provides an infographic on various statistics and facts with Titanic By the Numbers. Use a website such as Canva.com to have students create their own digital infographic with a fact or statistic they learned from the Titantic unit.
Alternatively, students could create a paper version.
Melissa's Tip of the Month
The Discovery Channel's Dive to the Titanic allows students to take control of submarines and take a virtual dive down to explore a behind-the-scenes look at the technology involved in building the Titanic. Students will gain a first-hand understanding of how deep the water really is (compared to the Empire State Building) as well as what it takes to maneuver the robotic submarines to navigate the dive site, and the Titanic itself.
