Thanksgiving is drawing near and what an appropriate time of year to celebrate and study the many American Indian tribes of North America. TrueFlix provides units on several tribes in the American Indians section, including the Apache, the Comanche, the Inuit, the Iroquois, the Pueblo and the Sioux.
Children may be especially fascinated by the lifestyle of the Inuit people. By exploring the video in the TrueFlix unit The Inuit, students will discover that the Inuit actually have 30 different names for snow! The book in this unit provides a ton of information on the Inuit way of life—including social customs and the many concessions they make to endure the harsh climate in which they live. Children may like to compare this life with their own life, or with the lives of the Apache, Comanche, or Iroquois. |

Go to the Explore the Web section and have students explore the games featured in the Virtual Museum of Games. Students can work in groups to explain the rules of one game to the class, and then use the rest of the class time to play the various games. As the Museum says, traditional Inuit games do not require equipment, and students may be surprised to see how familiar some of the games are! |

This is a great way to introduce another text type to students. |
|
Look at the Explore More section to find two Inuit folktales: The Coming of Men, a Long, Long While Ago; and The Raven and the Goose. Both stories are short, and can be easily compared with other folktales to give students a better understanding of Inuit culture. This is a great way to introduce another text type to students. |
