The Salem Witch Trials

In October thoughts turn to pumpkins, falling leaves, changing clocks, and Halloween: fall is almost here! An event often associated with this time of year due to its spooky name is the Salem Witch Trials. The Salem Witch Trails, however, did not happen at Halloween and were about power struggles in the early colonies and disputes between neighbors not about actual witches. The women and men accused of witchcraft were often individuals who didn't follow the social norms of the time or who were in feuds with their accusers. The trials went on for over a year between 1692 and 1693 in colonial Massachusetts. Ultimately 200 people were accused and 20 were sentenced to death.
